Global rugby powerhouse Toulon will field an all-star backline quintet consisting of Wallabies stars Drew Mitchell and James O’Connor and Pacific powerhouses Alesana Tuilaga and Josua Tuisova and Japan test fullback Ayumu Goromaru at the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens.
71-test fullback/winger Mitchell, former teenage prodigy O’Connor and former Queensland Red Goromaru will make homecomings to Suncorp Stadium on February 11 and 12 as part of a Toulon team bursting with international flavor.
“The chance to return to Australia and play at Suncorp Stadium as part of the first ever Toulon side to set foot in the country really is a dream come true,” Mitchell said.
“Toulon is a tremendous rugby club with a genuine international flavour and we can’t wait to bring our unique brand of rugby to the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens. And obviously it is going to be an extra special experience for the Aussies in our team.”
While much attention will be on Mitchell and O’Connor, blockbusting wing Josua Tuisova is sure to be one of the most eye-catching figures at the star-studded event. An Olympic gold medalist with the Fiji Sevens team in Rio, the gargantuan Tuisova is a 1.81m, 108kg wrecking ball with speed to burn.
A cult figure in Toulon for his blockbusting runs, the 22-year-old has scored 19 tries in 47 matches since joining the club as a teenage in 2013.
No less imposing is the hulking figure of Alesana (Alex) Tuilagi. At 1.85m and 124kg, Tuilagi dwarfs even Tuisova. A new recruit at Toulon, the 37-test Samoa international racked up over 150 appearances for Leicester Tigers in the English Premiership, and has also spent time in Italy and Japan.
Former Queensland Reds fullback and Japanese test star Goromaru and Argentine sevens Olympian Axel Muller add to the truly global make-up of the Toulon squad.
“Toulon is renowned for its global recruiting and this side is a wonderful reflection of just how successful they are in that regard,” Rachael Carroll, chief executive of tournament founder Duco Australia said.
“We can’t wait to welcome them to Australia’s shores. We know they are going to be a huge hit with the fans.”
